How does a writer think of a great story? How do they come up with their characters? Do they do all the drawings themselves?
Drop into these online sessions to hear stories, join activities and ask questions to the authors.
10.30 – 11.00 I Love Chinese New Year Eva Wong Nava reads from her new picture book I Love Chinese New Year. Twelve animals, one for each year, each one with their own special powers. It all started with a race to cross the most heavenly of rivers…
12.15 – 13.00 Doodles and Danny Chung with Maisie Chan Dive into the world of 11-year-old Danny Chung, who loves drawing more than anything – especially maths! Maisie Chan, author of Danny Chung Does Not Do Maths, appears live to read from her award-winning book and answer your burning questions.
This event ties into our current exhibition Chinese and British.
Maisie Chan is a children's author whose debut novel Danny Chung Does Not Do Maths won the Jhalak Prize and the Branford Boase Award in 2022. Her latest novel Keep Dancing, Lizzie Chu is out now with Piccadilly Press. She also writes the series Tiger Warrior under the name M. Chan. She has written for early readers for Hachette and Big Cat Collins, and has a collection of myths and legends out with Scholastic. She runs the Bubble Tea Writers Network to support and encourage writers of East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) descent in the UK. She has a dog called Miko who has big eyes. Eva Wong Nava was born on a tropical island where a heraldic animal spurts water. Her ancestors braved monsoon winds sailing from the Middle Kingdom to British Malaya to plant roots in Southeast Asia. When the winds changed, her relatives sailed again and found another home somewhere in the western hemisphere, braving snow storms and hail. She has written an award-winning middle-grade novel (Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards, 2018) and several fiction and nonfiction picture books. Eva has been a speaker at the Asian Festival of Children’s Content on writing diverse books and representing under-represented voices. Eva is the cofounder of Picture Book Matters, a mentoring platform for aspiring picture book creators in and from Southeast Asia. Eva lives in London with her family, two scampering squirrels, and a regal fox.
